It is very common when a person gets charged with a crime to immediately see their “lives flash in front of their eyes.” They immediately see the likelihood they will lose their driver’s license, job, career, income, etc. But, don’t be so quick to rush to a conclusion.
Use this analogy: If you are sick. You go to the doctor. You get medicine or treatment. And, hopefully get better. There is a plan specifically tailored to your medical condition. Left untreated, the condition is likely to get worse.
It’s not too much different when working with a competent attorney. You need a plan specific to your legal situation. A legal situation left untreated, or “mistreated”, is likely to get worse as well.
If you are charged with a crime, you should first hire an attorney with experience defending criminal cases. Your life and liberty are not something you want to put in the hands of someone who “thinks” he or she can get the job done.
Attorneys who are competent in the area of criminal defense know what to look for when defending a criminal case. For example, was the traffic stop legal; did the government execute a valid search warrant; is the crime you are accused of actually a felony or does it more closely appear as a misdemeanor; and, what is the best tailored plan to defend your criminal case?
Going at it alone should not be an option. Having a criminal conviction on your record may impact your family, time with your family, parenting plans, career, where you live, etc.
Do your homework before hiring a criminal defense attorney. Read their bios. Research their experience and what types of cases they have been involved in. Put their name in Google and read as much as you can about them. Interview them (see previous Blog Post on Questions for the Attorney). In the interview, does the attorney sound rehearsed or is there an actual plan tailored specifically to your particular case? And, remember this, no attorney can promise or guarantee you a particular outcome. This is because every case is different.
